The Background

With these strong words, Marino ventured out on his own after the MP3.com scandal in 2000. He had already achieved much as an electronic musician and now he was prepared to go it alone. For this talented musician it meant creating his own studio called Marino Sounds where he composes and performs melodic synthesizer music. He writes and produces the music that plays in games, television and multi media projects. As an independent artist, he intentionally endeavors to keep his rates low as he blazes his way into the "Indie" market.

Career Pathway

When an artist goes independent, it means that he or she must have

• equipment or access to equipment
• a studio
• the skills for mixing and mastering
• sound engineering

A studio opens up a whole new career potential. As well as creating authentic original music, the artist can offer services to others as a way of supplementing a business venture.

There are many aspects of the craft that are essential for studio production. They include:

• CD mastering, audio processing
• live recording and demos
• voice-over capabilities
• commercial music capabilities such as jingles, background music and ambient sounds
• digital sound effects creation and recording

With such a wide repertoire of skills, an independent musician can survive and thrive in the competitive music world.

The Art of Promotion

To promote this and be of benefit to community Mario has also created a family type, online atmosphere where he encourages others to become independent like he is. By doing this he has created a support network where musicians chat and through conversation create an online presence. Independent artists must have some way to

• network socially
• let others know of availability
• have a presence through which they can offer demonstration examples (such as the one above)
• Introduce and promote their sound
• offer products for sale
• make it clear what services are for hire

This supportive marketing type venture is essential for artists if they aspire to remain viable without the backing of big venture companies. One of the sites that Marino has chosen to host his group is eCademy

"Being 'indie' is like being in a big family," Marino says.

Musical Influences

Marino remembers the old masters Rick Wakeman and Alan Parsons as he forges his unique brand of medieval methodology. "From intergalactic battles to dystopian visions of society, infinite space is the only limit for Marino and his music," says da Splendid eZine.com.

Marino Sounds is a project studio well known for its great sounds, brilliant melodic ideas, and professionalism. Marino says that he will always be a recording artist and musician who thrives in an environment where "creativity is balanced with professional discipline".
