Jazz Trumpet Legend, Maynard Ferguson Dies at Age 78

Not so long ago I had the opportunity to have my high school jazz band open for Maynard Ferguson at a local concert. Today, sadly, I learned of his passing on Aug. 24th.

Maynard Ferguson was a marvel of trumpet playing prowess. I will admit that his style of playing was not everyone's forte, but as a man I was very impressed with both his personable nature and willingness to encourage our youth to pursue music as a career. When my local jazz band had the chance to open for Maynard he came out to meet with us before the concert, spoke with us for quite some time, and then to top it all off put on a hell of a concert for a packed house. The world will miss Maynard Ferguson, who passed away at the age of 78 on August 24th, 2006.
